At the age of six I first put my fingers into clay. The tactile sensation thrilled me. That thrill has never left. Over the years it has evolved. The material itself is still a wonder to me. It is the earth and yet it can be molded into many shapes and sizes. The strength and versatility of ceramic holds my respect. I love clay and working with clay. In every culture the ability to shape wet clay into an object that held when dry was discovered. The functional forms created shaped the future. The fluid and tactile nature gave way to a range of aesthetics. I am particularly drawn to the curves of bulbous eastern forms, from Japan, China and Korea. My inspiration is shape itself and manipulation of the traditional vessel. I enjoy the perfection and elasticity of forms on the wheel. In creating molds from these perfect shapes and cutting them I create a new relationship with the form inviting a tactile experience for those who hold or interact with the object. In the way the cubist painters cut into the form on canvas I manipulate the form in three dimensional space so that it can be discovered again and again. My hope as an artist is to intrigue and inspire through emotional connection and touch.
